Hotels in Prague: prices, timing and areas
Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic, a city of Gothic spires, Baroque facades and Art Nouveau, listed by UNESCO, with the Castle hill above the Vltava, Charles Bridge and the Astronomical Clock that dates to 1410. Guests stay about three nights on average and split their time between the Old Town, the castle and walks along the river. The easiest way to get around is by tram, bus and metro, and you must validate your ticket to avoid a fine. This list has 3 755 properties, from a hostel bed to five stars in a palace or a former monastery. Below is what really drives the price of a stay in Prague: the month and day of arrival, the choice of district and the standard of the property.
When to book a stay in Prague for less
The cheapest month is January, right after the holidays, when rates drop by about a third against the rest of the year. The priciest is December, during the Christmas markets on the Old Town Square, when a room can run some two fifths above the average. Full summer, from June to August, is dear too, as the most tourists arrive then. The day of the week matters. The cheapest night is Sunday, as traffic eases, while you pay the most at the end of the week, on Friday and Saturday. It pays to book at least three weeks ahead, and clearly earlier for December and New Year.
What a stay costs by property type
Prague has a wide range of prices, from a hostel bed to apartments and five stars by Charles Bridge. The cheapest sleep is in hostels and three-star places; you pay the most for a family room and upper-tier properties. Below are indicative nightly rates for two people.
| Property type | Indicative price per night (from) |
| Hostel bed | from approx. 650 CZK |
| Three-star hotel | from approx. 950 CZK |
| Four-star hotel | from approx. 1,400 CZK |
| Five-star hotel | from approx. 1,800 CZK |
| Family room or apartment | from approx. 2,300 CZK |

Where a stay is cheaper and where it costs more
Most people look for a room in the Old Town, the heart of historic Prague, a short walk from the Astronomical Clock and Charles Bridge, where the average price is among the highest in the city. It is dear too in Malá Strana below the castle and around Prague 1. The cheapest is Prague 10 and the other well-connected outer districts, from where a tram reaches the centre quickly. For travellers with a car, properties on the edge such as Prague 6 or Prague 8, with free parking, can be handier. The choice of district usually shapes the bill more than the standard of the hotel itself.
Which stay in Prague suits whom
- First time in Prague. The Old Town is the easiest base, within walking distance of the Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge and the square. From here you can cover most sights on foot, without a tram.
- For families. Quieter places with family rooms outside the very centre, near Prague Zoo, Letná park and boat trips on the Vltava. Children enjoy the animals and the greenery.
- For couples. Boutique hotels in the palaces and townhouses of the Old Town, such as Residence Bene near Charles Bridge, with restaurants and cafés round the corner. Everything is close in the evening.
- With breakfast. Many places, such as Hotel Essence or Nosticova Heritage, include a generous breakfast, which helps you set off early to sightsee.
- With a view. Hotels such as Hotel Karlova a few hundred metres from the Astronomical Clock give a view over the historic centre. Handy for a short, characterful stay.
- Near the airport. Hotels by Václav Havel Airport suit an early flight. A bus or shuttle reaches the centre from here in about 30 to 40 minutes.
